Exp1. Week2

Halla Moutain, Jeju island, Korea
The shape/ appearance of Hallasan, the highest mountain in Korea, depicts that it is formed due to the volcano eruption. the top of this mountain is dented and it looks like there is a small puddle in the middle. there are green plants all over this mountain but it seems like there aren't many trees (the green plants might be the trees). the top of this mountain is lit by the sunlight but the some sides are shaded due to the irregularity of the terrain.

Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand
The trees without any leaves and the yellow hill/ mountain with the snow in the background show that this picture is taken in winter. It seems like the tress are grown from the shallow river and there isn't any pathway that people can walk around. the sun is illuminating the hills but not the river side.

 Namib-Naukluft national park, Namibia
This national park illustrates that it is a completely deserted place with a few small plants. The edgy hills of desert sand almost seem as if it is carved. the sunlight is coming from the back of the hills which tells us that it is close to the sunset time.

North pole, Alaska
This picture shows that there is a dense forest covered by tall, thin tress mostly without leaves. Their thin trunks convey that there isn't much water supply due to the cold and dry environment. Even though it seems like there is no clouds in the sky and the sunlight is directly coming from the sky, this area is not lightened and the sun looks blurry.

Abruzzo, Italy
This picture shows that there are a number of hills with a circular flatland covering a hill. In terms of vegetation, there are lots of different types of plants with various colours with some small and big rocks among the plants. Because of the  large amount of the clouds, the sun is only lighting the hill in the middle.

Exp1. Week1 Tutorials + Reflection

'Getting Started and Folder Structure'
- Bin 32 and Bin 64 folders: there are game files and editors and 64 is faster than bin32

- Code folder: there are example and you can make code changes

- Game folder, there are .pak files (this is where the whole game is e.g. sounds, particles, textures)

- Config files: try not to make changes in system.cfg, if you want to add new comments, then create a new file e.g. notepad, name it as 'user.cfg' then add custom comments. This will be loaded into Cryengine automatically

-Tools: open settingsmanager.exe and check for the green light

'Overview of the Cryengine 3 Sandbox User Interface'
- Camera speed: change the number of the 'speed' at the bottom. the lower the number it is, the slower it gets

- Ctrl + G : game mode

- To isolate something: in a search bar, type what you want to isolate then it'll hide every objects/ components except for the thing you've typed

- Rollup bar:  first tab (creating tap)- can create a series of entities
second tab (modify tap)- can modify terrain, vegetation etc.
                    third tab- hide/ unhide tab
                    fourth tab- layer manager

- Config speed: the lower, the faster

- By selecting X, Y, Z, or XY, you can move the object only in the selected axis

- In the tool bar, there's a button for grouping, this can help you organise/ move entities easily.

- Ctrl +1 : snaps to terrain

- Ctrl +2: snaps to both terrain and object

-  Triangular shaped button: snap angle for the rotation

- Ruler button: ruler tool- can move an object in exact distance

'Customising the Editor'
- In tools -> preferences, i'd untick 'enable source control'

- I'd set up the auto-save in order to not lose my work when the software suddenly shuts down

- Tick 'general geo on mouse hover' in preferences in order to view entities more clearly when it's hovered

- In tools -> customise keyboard -> options: I'd tick 'show short cut keys in screen divs' to memorise the short cuts to save time by not clicking the buttons one by one with mouse each time.

- In 'keyboard' I'd set my own shortcut keys for cryengine so that I can save time.

'Viewports'
- W: forward , A: left, D: right , S: back

- Right mouse: can look around

- Middle mouse : pan around

- Shift + any key: faster as in speed

- Wheel : front/ back

- Alt + middle: rotate camera

- Saving position(s): Ctrl + F1, F2, F3 .... F12

- Going to the saved position: Shift + F1, F2 .... F12

'User Interface Panels - Overview'
- H : hide

- F: freeze

- Ctrl + T: select objects panel

-DB: database - it is an entity library where you can create entities

-Shift + Space: highlight what you've selected

- Lighting panel : can adjust the time of the day, hour of sunset/ dawn , sun direction etc

- FG: flow graph - can script the levels

50 word reflection
As it was the first lecture for this course, it has introduced me an another new useful software called Cryengine. When I first saw the interface of Cryengine, I thought it would be too difficult to use it as it has lots of buttons and tabs which made it looks more complicated. However, after watching several tutorials I found out it is not as hard as I thougth and since it's pretty similar to 3ds Max, I think I could get used to it very soon. From the lecture, I have seen some previous works from past students and some of them have actually inspired me. I'm looking forward to getting to know more about this software and am going to create an island that is in my mind.
